- September 6 1994 - Full committee met and discussed a pilot study.
- September 14 1994 - Action plan for committee outlined.
- September 27 1994 - Harry Matthews requests search committee to review applications for
Coordinator of Assessment.
- September 27 1994 - Full committee met and divided into sub-committees.
- October 4 1994 - Written Communication Sub-Committee met and discussed goals,
feedback loop and plan.
- October 11 1994 - General Education Sub-committee met and discussed the need for faculty
involvement in assessment and dissemination of assessment results.
- October 20 1994 - Written Communication Sub-committee met and discussed methods of assessment,
including the use of portfolios and commercially-developed instruments.
- October 25 1994 - Committee discussed budget and timeline and sampling issues.
- November 2 1994 - Committee met and decided how to obtain an representative sample and designed
an assessment plan.
- November 9 1994 - Committee met and discussed course-embedded assessment and
data sources, including alumni survey.
- November 10 1994 - Process for assessing Written Communication developed.
- November 15 1994 - Committee met; sub-committees presented reports on commercial instruments
to assess general education, a schedule for assessment with regards to program review.
- November 30 1994 - Sub-committee B met to set a timeline and identify which assessment methods
were already in place at USC.
- December 21 1994 - Interim report sent to the Provost.

- January 18 1994 - The Provost accepted the recommendations of the Assessment Advisory Committee.
- January 23 1995 - Questionnaire administered to committee members.
- February 1 1995 - Full committee met and included members from the regional campuses; Written
Communication assessment plan was approved by the Provost;
questions about general education
would be added to the CSEQ. Adobe Acrobat required.
- February 8 1995 - Sub-committee A met to begin implementing Written Communication assessment
and flow chart for pilot project was drafted.
- February 9 1995 - CSEQ items relevant to general education were identified.
- February 15 1995 - Sub-committee B met and broke into three sub-groups, addressing policy,
informing faculty and the feedback loop.
- February 22 1995 - Sub-committee A resolved the problem of using Orientation and Testing to
collect a freshman writing sample, determined how to identify a sophomore sample, refined the
directions of the freshman and sophomore assessments and discussed the Sophomore Writing Assessment
Process.
- February 23 1995 - College of Science and Math faculty invited to attend Assessment Advisory
Committee meeting.
- Spring 1995 - Computer Skills survey administered to freshmen in UNIV 101.Adobe Acrobat required.
- March 1 1995 - Sub-committee B met to discuss publishing an assessment policy and addressed
concerns about adding questions to the CSEQ.
- March 15 1995 - Sub-committee B met with the Deans of Liberal Arts and Science and Math to
discuss faculty involvement in assessment.
- March 15 1995 - Role of committees clarifed and importance of the Provost's support noted.
- March 22 1995 - Sub-committee A decided to implement freshman writing assessment in the
Fall of 1995, in all UNIV 101 classes; they also discussed future plans to assess students'
computer skills.
- March 23 1995 - Institutional Planning and Assessment asks the Committee on Scholastic
Standards and Petitions to disseminate the university-wide assessment criteria and plan.
- March 24 1995 - University Provost reminds Deans to distribute report from the Assessment Committee
to faculty.
- March 24 1995 - Minutes from the Assessment Advisory Committee begin to be distributed to
academic deans.
- March 31 1995 - Membership of Assessment Advisory Committee reviewed for following academic year.
- April 5 1995 - Sub-committee B announced full endorsement from the Provost; addressed the need
to work on the Electronic Communiation element of the general education a goals; and
a preleminary plan was presented for the feedback loop.
- April 10 1995 - Academic assessment section was written for inclusion in the Undergraduate
Bulletin.
- April 10 1995 - Draft of the "Criteria for the Assessment of USC General Education" sent to
the chair of Committee on Scholastic Standards and Petitions.
- April 12 1995 - Sub-committee A met and discussed the assessment of Written Communication in UNIV101
classes.
- April 19 1995 - Sub-committee B met and spoke about the ACT as an instrument to assess general
education.
- April 20 1995 - The committee's revisions to the academic assessment section of the Undergraduate
Bulletin were sent to the Undergraduate Provost's office.
- May 16 1995 - Progress report sent to the Provost.
- April 19 1995 - Academic Assessment section revised for the Undergraduate Bulletin and USC's
Policies and Procedures manual.
