Describe the relationship among behavior, physical activity, functional capacity and health and disease across the life span.
| |
| Measures and Criteria |
EXSC 191-Students will complete a dietary and physical activity self-assessment report.
Criteria
80% of students will earn an 80% or higher on dietary and physical activity self-assessment report.
| Methods |
The instructor(s) of the selected courses will report grades for the assignment and will provide the program director with samples of student work for review/analysis. The results will be compiled by the program director and distributed annually to the Arnold School EXSC UG Advisory Committee and to respective academic department chairs (as applicable) for discussion. Appropriate recommendations for changes will be made and recorded in the committee minutes. The UG Advisory Committee meets as needed to review issues that may arise. |

| |
| Measures and Criteria |
EXSC 223, 223L EXSC 224, 224L-Students will answer questions on a cumulative exam discussing the connections between anatomical structures, physiological and cellular mechanisms of exercise.
Criteria
75% of the students in each course will average 70% or higher on the relevant exam questions. |
| Results |
Percent of the students taking EXSC 223, 223L, 224, and 224L who averaged at least 70% on associated questions:
Fall 2017: 71% (below 75% in all 4 courses) Spring 2018: 79% (below 75% in EXSC 224L) Fall 2018: 76% (below 75% in EXSC 224 and EXSC 224L) Spring 2019: 81% (all above 75% - minimum 78%)
Overall these criteria were met except in fall 2017, when the criteria were not met in any of the classes. In spring 2018 the criterion was not met in EXSC 224L. In fall 2018, the criterion was not met in EXSC 224 or EXSC 224L. See attached detailed results.
Two trends appear in the data from the 2 academic years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. First, the results from the 2 academic years show general improvement in students’ ability to apply course material to mechanisms of disease in Anatomy and Physiology I and II. Second, students tend to perform better in the spring semesters than the fall semesters. The results from recent fall semesters were likely influenced by weather-related phenomena requiring the closure of the University, disrupting course schedules, and increasing students’ perceived stress. |
| Use of Results |
Measures have already been taken to minimize the potential impact of weather-related phenomena on students perceived stress, study preparation, and access to course materials outside of class. First, early and timely communication about potential weather disturbances and discussion of a plan in the event of an actual weather disturbance. Second, students in EXSC 223 and EXSC 224 have access to peer instruction through the Student Success Center to improve study habits and promote early preparation for course exams promoting better long-term retention. Third, pre-recorded lectures are available to students online to supplement classroom lectures. Students can view the pre-recorded lectures at their leisure, and in the event of weather disturbances, the instructor can use the pre-recorded lectures in place of face to face lectures.
No changes to curriculum or assessments are planned at this time. |
| |
Learning Outcome 3. |

| |
| Measures and Criteria |
EPID 410-Students will complete an assignment that focuses on research methodology for addressing public health problems. (NOTE: Epidemiology is the foundational science of public health and by definition requires students to identify public health problems.)
